Living Simply in the Moment With Dementia

‘I spy with my little eye’ was one of my favourite games on those long, hot car trips to visit our cousins, who lived miles away. There would be the 4 kids, plus the entire luggage, stuffed in the back of our family’s Ford station wagon. I remember trying to find the most obscure little objects to spy, so I could outwit my 2 sisters and brother.

It is hard to believe that it has been 50 years since those carefree days. But, thanks to my husband’s fascination with the sky and clouds, those simple childhood memories are coming back. As we sit outside on our deck, listening to the spring birds, and watching the sky changing colors and textures, I spy with my little eye… something with pink and blue stripes. It is a tropical fish, quickly transforming into a Chinook salmon, complete with hooked nose and open mouth. A few minutes later, my husband, Dave, spots a big, furry black animal bounding across the open blue sky. He doesn’t know what type of animal it is–he no longer remembers.

Two and a half years ago, Dave, 59, was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia-the 2nd most common form of dementia under the age of 65. It begins by affecting the front half of the brain–the language, emotional and judgment areas. Similar to Alzheimer’s, it progresses 2-8 years from time of diagnosis. Dave is becoming quieter, more withdrawn and he doesn’t recognize many people he has known since childhood. He has increased sensitivity to high pitched noises, such as babies crying or people laughing, which makes it difficult for him to go to parties or family gatherings.

When our friends discover that Dave has dementia, many of them are surprised because of his age and are often lost for words. From the outside, it looks like our life is challenging, but on the inside, there are many gifts that living with dementia has brought us. It has reminded me to take the time to sit on our deck, looking at the sky, playing simple games like ‘I spy with my little eye.’ I am learning to turn off the ‘whirligigs’ in my brain–long enough to feel that peaceful, inner silence. And I appreciate what I have in my life at this very moment, instead of focusing on what I don’t have.

Since Dave was diagnosed, he has taught me to accept what life is offering me and to do the best I can every day. He has never been angry or ashamed about his dementia and despite all of the challenges that his condition brings, he continues to enjoy his life by…’living simply in the moment’.

Protect Your Self Against Identity Theft Before Getting Rid of Your Old PC

Are you thinking about getting rid of your old computer, donating it or Giving it away? Well if you are, you should read this first. Used computers are an easy target for identity theft. It’s very important that you understand the steps you need to take to in order to protect yourself and your identity.

Whenever you sell your PC or give it away, you should always erase all your personal & confidential information. But it’s not that simple.

The next few steps I have put together are to help protect your personal information and shut the door on any potential identity theft risk.

I have to admit that one of the only fail-safe way to completely prevent Identity theft when selling or giving away your PC is to yank out the hard drive first then let a truck pass over it a few times. (LOL)

To be extra safe you may take it to a crushing machine. But that’s a bit extreme especially if you want to sell it or give away to someone.

Replacing your old PC or Laptop

One of the reasons many people are replacing their PC’s at a faster pace now is because today’s PC games, internet activity and everything else demands a faster, more powerful machine.

But there are always others out there who can still use your old computer. These people or organizations don’t require the speed or need that you do. Nevertheless, it is imperative that your personal information stays with you and does not go with the PC.

The following steps are a way to help you decide what to do with your old PC and how to go about it.

Here are a Few tips on how to prevent ID theft when you sell, recycle or give away your old computer.

Step 1. You can remove the hard drive or drives. This step, while is quick and easy to do, is also very drastic. If you choose this option then of course you still going to have the data-packed drive left. Besides, opening up your PC has risks. You can easily damage other parts as well as your self.

If after all, you do choose this route, you can still erase the drive later on by connecting it to another computer with a special USB cable.

Step 2. Erase part or all of the drive and leave it in your PC. This sounds relatively easy but there’s a catch. (actually two)

A) if you erase the drive, by reformatting it or deleting folders individually along with files, this doesn’t actually delete the data. This will only remove file names from the drive’s master index and the files themselves can still be easily read using any file recovery software.

B) You can’t reformat your main hard drive (it’s usually located in the “C” drive on a PC) while it’s in use helping to run your computer.

You will probably need special software specifically for this so that it will completely destroy all files, overwriting with zeroes several times. There are two links further on down if so choose this method.

Mac users should use the built-in Disk Utility. Perform a secure erase of all free drive space.

NOTE* if you’re erasing your main drive, as mentioned above, you’ll need to boot (launch) your computer from a specially prepared CD since you’ll be wiping out your operating system (e.g., Windows).

Choosing the right step for you

Step 3. Erase only the data and personal information. If you do this, you will leave your operating system and other programs intact for the next user.

Again, I recommend using a dedicated file deletion program to completely nuke & destroy your personal data (this after you copy or back it up for your new machine, of course!) folder by folder.

NOTE* Many programs you might leave in your old PC (especially Internet browsers) can retain personal information, like passwords or details of sites you visited.

You should be able to either uninstall these separately or delete personal information from them.

Step 4. Removing other media. Make sure that you DO NOT leave a disk in the computer’s CD/DVD drive. Or a Compact Flash or Secure Digital card or memory stick in the reader, or floppy or Zip disk as well.

I once sold a laptop to a friend and I went ahead and erased all my personal data using a program called Evidence Nuker. But inside the disk drive…. I had a CD with all my personal passwords I had just saved there to swap to my new Laptop. Luckily for me my friend noticed it and gave it back to me. To show my gratitude I gave him back a $100.00 Bux and said “have dinner on me!

Recruit Like a Pro – The Key For Success Is Not Trying to Sign Up Everything With a Pulse

Only a fraction of MLM distributors and Direct Sales consultants come from a sales background. Therefore, sales presentations and pitching business opportunities is often a new challenge. The idea of going out and pitching a business idea with family and friends can be a daunting challenge. Even the mere thought of selling can leave them with a knot in their stomach and feeling sick. This fear is usually due to the anticipation of rejection. Rejection is the single biggest reason that people quit on their dreams with their home based business. In this article I want you to consider how you approach recruiting, and how a professional athlete goes about their sport.

When a new distributor joins a company they are ‘hyped’. Their sponsor often tells them to start by writing down a list of 100 people they know. They then set on their crusade telling everyone on their list (warm market) about this amazing business they have just joined. If they are lucky they may recruit a few people into their team. However, the reality is that they will probably experience negativity, even ridicule and may even lose a few friends along the way. This can have a devastating effect, with many quitting before they even get started. They suddenly have a realisation that they cannot do this or that the business will simply never work. They may even feel stupid and doubt their judgment in even getting involved in the business in the first place.

For those that survive this experience it then gets worse. Having worked their way through their warm market they then have to go out and approach people they don’t even know. It becomes a ‘Pitch Fest’ as they start trying to convince total strangers to join their business. Anything with a pulse that comes within 3 feet gets their best business presentation. I know all about this because for 6 years I spent my time in MLM looking for situations and opportunities that would let me strike up conversations with total strangers. I agree that this technique works to a certain extent because at one point I was recognised by my company as their top recruiter in Europe! But the thing was that I came from having a successful career in sales and was used to this. One of the main problems with this technique is that prospects were turned off. They loved the idea of financial freedom but they could never imagine themselves being able to do what I was doing.

I vividly remember spending time thinking of locations that would be good places to speak to total strangers and hopefully directing these random conversation onto my business opportunity. Now I realise how flawed this strategy was and cringe to think how much time I wasted. You see I was spending hours and hours trying to convince un-qualified prospects that did not have the slightest interest in working for themselves never mind starting an MLM business.

This is where I want you to compare the strategy of how athletes play sport and how distributors recruit. You see unlike an MLM distributor, an athlete does not try to hit a winning shot EVERY time. When you watch tennis they may play a number of strokes before the opportunity arises to play a winner. In boxing there are many punches exchanged before they go for a KO. In golf they do not try to hit the ball in the hole EVERY time. That approach may be too risky so instead they play a tactical shot until they are in the right position to attack the pin. However, MLM distributors often go out and try to convince every person that they come into contact with to sign up and join their business.

I am embarrassed about it now but I used to urge my team on by telling them to do exactly as my sponsor had instructed me in those early days. I told them that the answer for them was just to get out there and talk to more people! If you are heading down this road and believe the secret is simply to talk to more people you have to STOP right now. Doing all this was great in the 70′s, 80′s and even early 90′s but things have moved on incredibly quickly. Think about this, you are reading this article on the Internet. You are one of millions of people who use the internet on a daily basis to research business opportunities. I am sure you’ll agree that it would be better to tap into this market of people searching to improve their future than chasing after random strangers in the local shopping mall.

If you are like me you are probably now a bit confused with the news that you should stop pitching everything that moves. It took me a while to realise why this approach was ineffective because I had been conditioned for so long into thinking about pitching everything. I believed that the law of numbers dictated that someone somewhere would eventually join. Well if the 3 foot rule is not the answer what is the solution?

The answer is simple. You must become a master at Attraction marketing. You must master the skill of being able to generate your own leads. You have to use a system that sifts your prospects for you because you only want to spend your time speaking to highly qualified prospects. Your ultimate goal is to fill your pipeline with high quality leads. A high quality lead that searches for you and makes contact with you because they are interested in what you have to offer, has a far higher probability of joining you than some bloke that you strike up a conversation with whilst in the queue at the local post office.

Aspects of Grief – Naming Anger

Anger. Such an uncomfortable subject for most of us to face and discuss. Anger is viewed as a negative emotion and most of us don’t like to pull it out and publicly examine it. It is important to understand that the emotion of anger is not negative or “bad.” In fact, it is a useful signal that there is a problem aching to be resolved. Only the actions that come from anger are sometimes negative or “bad.”

When someone we love dies, we experience an intense, yet unfocused, emotional energy. The whole experience of loss is somewhat intangible in nature. At one minute there is a flesh and blood being that you can see, feel, hear and touch. And then there is nothing…It is very difficult to process our emotions in that void. It is both frustrating and unsettling. In this formless state, our emotional energy wears us out, leaving us feeling exhausted and defeated.

To constructively deal with feelings of anger, there are two important characteristics that we must understand.

First, anger focuses our emotional energy in a very powerful way and gives us a tangible target for that energy. It gives us a feeling of control in a situation where we were feeling out of control and powerless. As a focus for our emotional energy, anger can serve a useful purpose by enabling us to take steps to cope with our pain.

That leads us to the second aspect. Anger is almost always a secondary emotion. The target of our anger may not be the true cause of our pain, only the outlet of it for lack of a better target. It is extremely important that we analyze the real cause of our anger so that we deal with the actual issues we face.

Against the backdrop of the emotionally charged energy surrounding grief, we must be very careful to step back and objectively evaluate what is the true cause of our pain. In this situation, anger may have so powerfully focused our energy that the resulting actions can be very destructive. Until we can understand the underlying cause of that pain, we cannot cope with it in a positive way that will result in our own healing. And our own healing is the outcome we need.

Several years ago, I came across a simple prayer that has become a convenient tool for beginning to examine the true reasons for feeling angry.

Naming Anger(1)

I know the one I have lost did not choose to die
and yet I am angry about this death.
It has turned my life upside down and inside out;
this absence brings anguish, loneliness and a sense of being abandoned.
It hurts to confess these feelings, but I must.
Sustain me as I explore this rage.

Lead me to understand that,
because the future as I designed it is now utterly lost,
I am more disappointed than angry.
Lead me to understand that,
because all that was orderly and certain in my life
is now chaotic and unsure,
I am more frightened that angry.
Lead me to understand that,
because I am powerless to bring my mate back,
I am more frustrated than angry.

Open my mind and heart to these truths.
Help me to let go of my misplaced anger
and to spin its thread into spiritual peace.

In order to benefit from our feelings of anger, we must name it (loneliness, fear, frustration, jealousy) in order to deal with it constructively. Working through these challenges enables us to move forward in our journey to a recovery that leads to inner peace and healing.

Now That You’ve Gone – I Love You!

Did your boyfriend or girlfriend just break up with you? Are you missing your ex? I know the feeling. At one time or another we all have done something to someone who loves us that has made that person break off the relationship. The bad part about it is that we don’t really realize ‘how much’ we really love that person until he or she is gone. The more we try to forget about them, the deeper they get into our thoughts and hearts. Thus you know the reason why the saying “you never know what you have until you lose it” has become so popular. Because sadly enough, it’s true!

I had a similar situation happen to me. My ex broke up with me a few months back and to say that it took a while to get over it is an understatement. Usually the longer you are with the person, the longer it takes to forget and move on. Of course there are exceptions to this rule such as a stalker, a person who just got out of jail or someone with a severe mental problem.

I admit that it was my fault. Funny thing is that you never see the things you doing wrong until it’s sometimes too late. After that happens, you look at it from a different point of view, with different eyes. Once you have a broken heart, your eyes become clearer. Sometimes it doesn’t really take something major in your part to cause the other person to break up with you. It could be an accumulation of things past. Then one day, abruptly, it’s over. By the time you realize what has happened, he or she is out of your life forever. Wow, forever, seems so short when you’re together with someone, so long when they are gone.

Mistakes to avoid losing the one you love

One of the mistakes I made was one that I’m sure we all make at one time or another. While my ex wanted to go out, I wanted to hang out with my friends. Whenever my ex wanted to go out to a movie or out to dinner, I would much rather hang out at a sports bar watching a game with my boys. Not that we didn’t go out or that I didn’t take her places. We did lot’s of things together. It was just lately I had wanted to hang out with my friends a bit more. Funny thing is that now that my ex is gone, my friends call me all the time to hang out with them, to come over my house and watch a ‘fight’ on TV or something. Yet now that I have free time, I don’t care to. Now isn’t that funny?

Many times I was with my ex and she would talk for like what seemed like forever. Has this happened to you? Well the problem is that while she wanted to tell you about her day, or anything else, we were thinking about something else further down the line. “You never listen to me” she would exclaim. I would respond with “sure I do sweetheart” but had no idea what to answer when she would quiz me on what she had just told me. Sort of like when you were in school with your teacher. You there in the classroom, you hearing everything the teacher is saying….. But you’re not listening!!

Another huge mistake to avoid is to remember important dates. “Was that today?” is not the answer your partner is looking for when you walk in to find candles lit in the dinning room, or her dressed ready to be taken out somewhere. The all time blunder is when she gives you a gift and you just realized you did not buy her one. Whether is for an anniversary or Valentines Day, whatever. In my defense I must add that I was working almost 14 hours a day, but of course this is no excuse. You would think that with all the Pda’s available, calendar apps for your PC, we would get it through our heads to put it in there as a reminder. Funny thing is that now that she’s gone, I remember it!

Remember why she fell in love with you in the first place

At the beginning of the relationships we start out giving her flowers, candy, surprising her with any little thing. After all, little things mean a lot. Yet over time, we become relaxed, let our guards down and thus we forget what led us to win her heart in the first place.

Pay attention to detail. The worse thing you can do is go see your girl and not notice her new hair cut or color. Have you any idea how much trouble a woman goes through in a salon all day to get this done? How expensive it is for you not to notice? Maybe she bought a pair of shoes, a new blouse or dress. You need to be on point!

Why is it so hard for you to say that you love her? To tell her that you would do anything for her? That she means the world to you? Telling someone how much you care for them can go a long way to relieving a person’s stressful day or cheering that person up. It can go a long way to reassure them that they are loved.

I have talked with my ex recently. I have promised her that I am a different man now that we’re not together. She’s a little skeptical. Can I blame her?
